Disruptions expected: Lae, Papua New Guinea

20/09/2022

We would like to make you aware of likely delays to shipping services and impacts to the supply chain for an estimated 30 days as SPICT – the terminal operator at Lae – receives and installs 2 new Shore-To-Shore (STS) cranes. This is part of their investment and efforts to increase the productivity of their terminals in Papua New Guinea.

The timeline for crane delivery and installation is as follows:

• Arrival: October 25th
• Unloading of cranes: October 26th – 29th (4 days)
• Commissioning and hand-over: October 30th – December 7th (39 days)

The Lae Tidal Basin will be out of use during most of this time and with operations initially limited to 3 cranes, we expect overall productivity to decrease temporarily during commissioning time. However, the SPICT team is already working on ways to ensure the fastest possible turn-around time for our vessels, thus keep containers moving through the port as efficiently as possible.

We will continue to advise you of any updates as ICTSI and Swire Shipping work to minimise disruption during this time.
In the meantime, we recommend modifying cargo timing outside this delivery timing.
