The Protecting Blue Whales and Blue Skies Program advocates for the creation of seasonal and predictable slow speed zones to protect endangered whales, reduce fuel use and regional carbon emissions.

In 2022, Swire Shipping had once again volunteered for the Vessel Speed Reduction (VSR) program to act upon sustainable shipping practices in line with our sustainable goals. During the 12-month timeframe, Swire Shipping Vessels had sailed a total of  1,831.95 Nautical Miles in this VSR Zone*. Of the 1,831.95 Nautical Miles, 95% of this distance were travelled at 10 Knots or less.

What does this mean?

By travelling at 10 Knots or less, we reduced the likelihood of mortalities and serious injuries to endangered right whales from vessel collisions. To add, this act is an effective short-term measure to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.

Program Outcome

With Swire Shipping’s sailing performance in the VSR region, we have been awarded the Highest Tier Sapphire Award along together with a cash incentive of USD5,000.

Following tradition, Swire Shipping has decline this incentive award ensuring that it is re-contributed back into the VSR program in order to encourage more companies to participate and play their part of keeping whales safe and reducing their greenhouse gas emissions.

*VSR zone covers Southern California Region and San Francisco Bay Area as seen in map below.
