Procedure for Carriage of Copra in Containers

Commodity: UN 1363, Copra, Class 4.2, Packaging Group – III
Spontaneously combustible with a penetrating rancid odour which may taint other cargoes.
General requirements
- Always load clean, dry copra and free of insects.
- Don’t load copra if the temperature of the cargo exceeds the ambient temperature.
Packaging instructions for acceptance in container
- In 50 kg swift proof bags:
- A paper lining bonded to the inner surface of the Jute bags; or
- A plastics film bonded to the inner surface of the Jute bags; or
- PP bags with one or more separate inner liners made of plastics material;
- For bulk shipments, use good condition liner bags with no tears, clean and free of moisture.
Container
- Must be in sound condition and watertight, free of moisture, clean of previous cargo, insect free and the door gasket intact.
- Keep ventilation holes in open condition.
- Maximum height of copra in the container should be less than 6 inches/15 cm from roof to maintain clearance for airflow.
- Placard with “Class 4” & “UN 1363” labels on all four sides
Documentation
- Dangerous Good Declaration from shipper
- Copra shall preferably have been weathered for not less than one month before shipment unless a certificate from a person recognised by the competent authority of the country of shipment states a maximum moisture content of 5%
Stowage on board
- Stow away from Direct Sunlight, Protected from heat sources, away from Reefers, Heated Fuel Oil tanks and away from the accommodation. Due to its spontaneously combustive nature ON DECK STOW ONLY.
